Update on Bail Appeal in G-B Chief Court

May 18, 2012
justice delayed is justice denied

Yesterday, 17th May, 2012, the Chief Court of Gilgit-Baltistan was scheduled to hear arguments from Advocate Ihsan Ali, legal counsel for the Hunza Five, in support of their appeal against the denial of bail by the Gilgit Anti-Terrorism Court.

However, one of the judges could not attend the proceedings. Hence, the hearing has been postponed to Tuesday, 22nd May, 2012.

To sum up the progress of the appeal against the denial of bail this month:

– Court sets Monday, 14th May, 2012 as the date for the hearing

– On 14th May, 2012, the Chief Court moves the date of the hearing out to Tuesday, 15th May, 2012

– On 15th May, 2012, Advocate Ihsan Ali had just started presenting his arguments when the bench decided that they needed to research a point of law raised by the counsel in his arguments. So, 17th May, 2012 was set as the next date of the hearing.

– On 17th May, 2012, the Court failed to honour its own date as one of the honourable members of the bench was not available for the hearing.

We demand that the Chief Court take cognizance of this appeal that is pending before the court for several months now.
