Amnesty International aware of Baba Jan’s case but refuses to take action

May 11, 2012

Baba Jan’s supporters wrote to Amnesty International demanding that the organization take action for the release of Baba Jan and his friends. In her reply, Maya Pastakia , campaigner for Pakistan, said they don’t have the capacity to take action for all the cases they receive from Pakistan: “We’re pleased that  HRCP has given prominence to this case and at this stage we feel we don’t need to duplicate their efforts.  We are, however, monitoring the case through our contacts in Pakistan.”

We believe securing the rights of human rights activists should be a priority for Amnesty International and that they should therefore take up the case of Baba Jan and his friends.

We call for supporters to write to Amnesty International and ask them to issue a statement demanding the release of Baba Jan and to include him in their urgent action campaign.

Write to them at:

It is unfortunate that Amnesty International is not taking up this case. Although HRCPhas given good priority to this case but AI has it’s own network. I demand AI must immediately take up the case and campaign for the release of Baba Jan and others.
